What I Have Against Ricki Lake

May 20, 2009

Don’t get me wrong, I love Ricki Lake.  Ignoring her latest ‘look at me, I lost weight!’ thing (hey, I lost and gained 15 pounds in the last three months.  I’d call US Weekly too to document my skinny days), she’s one of they few people on screen who look and talk like me.  Actually, she could be my friend Jessi’s sister.  I loved the Ricki show even.

I only have two problems with Ricki Lake:

1. Seriously, did we have to see her giving birth?  The Business of Being Born was great, but they spent all this time talking about how awesome home birth was, then showed all these women naked and in agony.  Plus, all the “juice” splashing everywhere in the moment of birth just messed me up, and I’m a woman.  Frankly, I would have thought long and hard about whether people needed to see me giving birth on Showtime twice on a Monday night, and I think the movie wouldn’t have suffered.  So, in conclusion, Business of Being Born is totally awesome, but way too damn long and too many cringe moments undercut the message.  At one point they knocked “A Baby Story” on TLC, but frankly, those ladies go in, get an epidural, sleep all night, and suddenly wake up and give birth.  Maybe it’s just because I’ve never given birth, but I’m still leaning towards that versus mind-numbing pain + ruined carpets.

2. Charm School.

That is all.

Thanks — I have taken a lot of heat from the Ricki Lake/homebirth camp about my position that birth does not need to be painful and in your bathtub to be really wonderful. For many people that scenario is terribly frightening. When I saw the “Business of Being Born” in San Francisco, the film got stuck and we watched Ms. Lake’s bathtub birth scene 7 times. Wow — that is a lot of naked Ricki Lake.

Actually, I found that part of the message very confusing. I’ve definitely heard that water births can be free of agony. There’s the famous orgasm-ing woman giving birth in water.

And then BoBB just went on and on and on about how agonizing it is. Refreshing honesty, but it was a little overkill.

I loved all the info in the movie, but I think there’s definitely room for more!
